Город в центральной части штата Юта на р. Джордан [Jordan River] близ Большого Соленого озера [ Great Salt Lake]. Город основан в 1847 главой мормонов [ Mormons] Б. Янгом [ Young, Brigham]; строился по проекту Дж. Смита [ Smith, Joseph] (1833) как идеальный город - "Град Сионский" ["City of Zion"]: широкие улицы, идущие от центра, кварталы - одинаковые квадраты с внутренними улицами-тупиками. В 1840-50-е служил перевалочным пунктом для переселенцев в Калифорнию. С развитием горнодобывающей отрасли и строительством железных дорог в 1860-70-е гг. Солт-Лейк-Сити превратился в крупный торговый центр Запада [ West]. В 1856 город стал столицей Территории Юта [Territory of Utah], с 1896 - столицей штата. Международная штаб-квартира Церкви Иисуса Христа Святых Последних Дней [ Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints], около 65 процентов жителей - мормоны; одно из прозвищ города - Священный город святых [Saints' Holy City]. Среди достопримечательностей: Храм мормонов [Mormon Temple] (1853-93) - величественный собор Церкви Иисуса Христа Святых Последних Дней и Молельный дом [ Tabernacle; Mormon Tabernacle] (1867) мормонов, "Пчелиный дом" [ Beehive House], Храмовая площадь [ Temple Square], "Львиный дом" [Lion House] (здесь жили многочисленные жены Б. Янга), спортивно-концертный комплекс "Солт-палас" [Salt Palace (Civic Auditorium)], капитолий штата [State Capitol], Художественный центр "Соленое озеро" [Salt Lake Art Center], Юго-Восточный храм [South East Temple] (1909), один из крупнейших в США торговых центров [ shopping center] "Кроссроудс-плаза" [Crossroads Plaza]. В пригороде горнолыжные курорты, соляные поля озера Бонневилл [Lake Bonneville Flats; Bonneville Salt Flats].
